No other year in recent history brought as much anticipation or excitement as the Millennium. To the delight of thousands of hybrid vehicle fans, 2000 was the first year Toyota Prius hit American shores.

The world began to change in new and exciting ways once the Y2K bug was debunked and people began to confidently move on with their lives. The Razor scooter from RazorUSA seemed to hit every suburban street at once around the holidays and was quickly named Toy Of The Year.

While the Prius was just getting rolling in the U.S., it was already celebrating its third year in Japan. In Canada, a progressive taxi company in Vancouver enlisted the Prius to its fleet. Fuel efficient and quiet, the Prius taxi soon followed in cities all across North America. It was a year full of celebration and relief, as people around the world felt like the turning of the millennium brought fresh hope and potential.

  • Picked up my first Prius in November of 2000, and it’s still my main vehicle, although we’ve since added two more to the family fleet.
